Re: lambda sond badge 200 '88

Lambda sond celebrates that Volvo installed an oxygen sensor referenced

engine management system. This was an added feature to the existing K-jetronic injection system. It allowed much more accurate mixtures thus

making it possible to go to a 3 way catalytic converter instead of a 2-way

and also doing away with the air pump on the engine. The engine got better

mileage and lower emissions. It also allowed them to do away with the

EGR. When the emissions standards got tighter in the 80s they did

bring back stuff like the air pump and EGR but for the 49 state cars they

didn't need it. Only for the Cal emmissions to my knowledge.

It was a vast improvement that they were proud of thus a badge for the

grill. When I was in England there were 'Catalyzer' badges on the newer

7xx series cars that I saw. Same kind of thing as here. New systems, better

emissions, 'Hey lets make a badge about it.'

I think Volvo introduced it in 1977. In the next few years every car manufacturer went to O2 sensor based engine management. I like the badge

and think its cool looking.
