I had a similar problem a while ago with my 84. I took out the intermittent w/w relay (under metal plate beneath carpet on left side of driver foot well) and cleaned it/checked solder volume and connections. Installed it and no more stops in the middle of the windshield and intermittent wipers with minds of their own. Sometimes it can get wet (mine was in a plastic bag that had condensation inside) so let it thoroughly.
