Re: Starting Problem 200 1987

Bob --

Sure sounds like a classic case of "fuel pump relayitis" to me. Replace it (cost about 40 bucks) or resolder it (cost 0 bucks).

On your car, the fuel pump relay is a white plastic box, about 1" by 1.5" by 1.5" clipped to the inside of the firewall, passenger's side. Drop the felt kick pad and look behind the glove box, just about where a tall passemger would put his/her feet.

Remove and unplug the relay -- pop the plastic cover off, and examine the backside of the printed circuit board with a magnifying glass. You'll probably see tiny, hairline cracks around some of the solder connections.

Resolder the entire board, taking care to avoid solder bridges between adjacent traces. You may need extra heat for the larger solder joints -- I use a solder gun for these.

I've resoldered dozens of these guys, and they all worked fine.

BTW, same story for intermittent OD relays, w/w relays, etc. There's a bunch in your car.
