Customs, duties and taxes importing in to Canada ALL ANY

I'm sorry to post this here but I don't know a better source of information.

If I plan to buy equipment from IPD, MVP, or who ever, how much tax should I expect to pay to bring it in to Canada. Every time I've done it (even through Ebay) I seem to get hit really hard with the duties and taxes. Am I doing something wrong? Would I benefit if I made the purchase through a business in Canada rather than personally? If there is some loop-hole or "smart" way to import new things, I'd love to know.
