Hard time with distributor. 700 1985

Some days aren't too good. I got a distributor base plat and took the shaft off the old one.When I try to fit the plate into the dog cutouts, it

won't seat all the way so that the plate is flush. I don't want force it.

I don't know if I bent the shaft, maybe.
