The B280 is a good engine. Still de-tuned, but much better than the B27's & B28's. Volvo took over the manufacture of the engine and made it even firing and used the LH fuel system as opposed to K jetronic. It's still not a ''Volvo'' engine. You can easily expect 300,000 miles out of one if maintained by-the-book, and driven long distances, rather than short.
I kinda like to work on well maintained ones, but the customer's wallet needs to be fat because slow moving parts cost more. The distributor seal is the most common oil leak, and fuel economy is around 24mpg. The transmission is an Aisin-Warner, and is nearly bomb proof.
I dont think the ZF POS transmission was around in '90. I like the smooth power they give and the interior noise level is less than a 4 cylinder engine.
Horsepower schmorsepower. My one ton crewcab dually has less than 200hp and weighs twice as much as any Volvo, yet it will tow two of them in a 3000 pound trailer. A 200hp Volvo won't do that. Different kind of horses? Horsepower wins the girls, torque wins the races.
