My 122 did this. It was cured by resyncing the carbs which were

way out of wack (one way too rich, the idles way off, and the throttle

shaft way out of wack; I dare say it was running mostly on one carb).

My 164 also did this. It was cured by removing the points and filing

off the mountain that had formed on one of them and by regapping them

(they weren't opening by the time the car ran like total crap)

Good luck. These things have to be totally out of sorts before they

work as poorly as you describe.
