Yep and yep. I agree -- both are right, depending on the circumstances.
"...seals and belt are as dry as you say they are, I personally would leave them alone..."
I did exactly that when I performed a routine belt replacement at 205k miles on wifemobile (vanila '91 740).
Then the dry and dried out and frizzeled up intermediate shaft seal spun outta the housing and oil went everywhere. I ended up with an emergency repair and had to replace a timing belt that had under 10k miles.
Just my 2 cents worth.... I'm taking an "it depends" posture for myself.
