Re: bolt patterns 700 88

Nope, nearly all Volvos from the first 240 up through the 850 had a 5x108mm bolt pattern (5x4.25"). That includes every 240, 260, 740, 760, 780, 940, & 960. Nearly every 850 has that pattern too, except for the '93 model, which had a 4 bolt pattern instead (4x4.25"). Some of the older models (122 & 1800) used a 5x4.5" pattern, but that was prior to 1970.

If you're shopping for wheels, you also need to get the proper offset, which is 25mm for the 700 series. If you tried to mount 17" wheels from an 850, they would rub on the inner fender or on the struts because the difference in offset is about 15-20mm. With wheel adapters you could mount the 850 wheels by spacing them ~20mm from the hub.

The use of wheel adapters can broaden the range of wheels that could fit your car. With the adapters, you have the holes drilled at 5x108mm, but you could have the protruding studs set at almost any pattern you want. This method is commonly used by Volkswagen owners who put Porsche wheels (5x130) on cars with 4x100 or 5x100 bolt patterns.
