Steering box ????s 120-130 1966

What does the adjustment screw on the top of the steering box do? Merely align the wheels so the are "straight" when the steering wheel is at a normal resting position? Does it do anything to reduce excessive play in the steering wheel? Is there a fix for excessive play beyond replacing the box? Possible to recondition the box at all? Thx
