Resolder the relay, takes 10 minutes, cost nothing. See 700/900 FAQ section for info on this. The relay, the light and the switch are a "closed loop". The goings on in the transmission or the solonoid cannot affect the workings of the light so the problem must be in the "loop". If you are uncomfortable soldering the relay replace it (I would even resolder a new one). Any capable and ethical Volvo shop (not a dealer!) should do this for you for minimal cost.
