Hey Don!
I have an assortment of starters that I have interchanged between
my 164, my 122 (B20) and probably my 145. I have the best cranking
starter on my 122. Unfortunately it is also the worst engaging and
sometimes will make about 8-10 false starts before engaging and
cranking the engine (which it does VERY well). Among other things
this is embarrassing and also sometimes causes a very undesirable delay
in forward progress. It also can be disturbing when you want to sneak
out of a campground in the middle of the night.
This seems to be mostly related to the starter since none of my other
starters do this. BUT, if I roll the engine over just a bit, it
usually (not always) engages immediately.
I've tried various adjustments on the starter to
try to get it to engage further before the solenoid make contact but
no success so far. Last time I looked at the flywheel gear I didn't
see any obvious damage. S'pose I should (next time I'm in there)
reinstall the flywheel?
