Epilogue: The flex plate center is completely broken, although not falling out. It has shifted position also and has been chafing on the spacer between the crank and plate. Feel fortunate it did not just blow up. Will take a pic of it for history.
The why of it evades me. A machinist friend of mine said that if the return line from the cooler is kinked or blocked, pressure can build up in the torque converter, causing it to 'balloon', pressuring the flex plate and cracking it. Supposedly happens in GM stuff. Only thing blocking the line is a filter on the return line, which I will check out.
