Problems in rain... 200 1988

I have an '88 244 GL with 160K miles, and last night while driving home in the rain a sound much like a belt screaming (it sounded like it came from the engine) would happen sporadically when accelerating, more so whenever I would drive over a big puddle. Any ideas as to what it could be?
