I should also mention how the locking mechanism works and what is probably happening with your door. The locking mechanism has a white plastic unit inside of it that slides over one of three contacts (also on white plastic blocks) to complete circuits and trigger a door lock/unlock. Imagine three blocks side by side, each with separate metal "tabs" on one top. Now imagine a single block opposing those three (all blocks same size) with its own metal tabs opposing the tabs of teh original three. Put this single block in runners so it can slide back and forth and you have the trigger. When you lock or unlock the doors the metal tabs switch positions, completing a circuit and triggering a specific signal to all the other doors.
Its possible your unit isn't shot. Maybe the external U latch that locks onto the pole detached from the block I describe above inside. If this happened the block inside might be able to slide down at will. I believe the down position triggers a lock signal, so this could be why when you "pull the door handle" it locks; the triggering block has nothing to hold it up and just slides down in the runners, triggering the doors to lock.
Take the unit apart and see. Careful with the wires that lead in, you'll have to finagle the cover over them sinc ethey get stiff with time. With my lock the relay was actually shorting out (it woudl just keep trying to send a signal), and killing the battery.
Good luck,
Rick
