Create leaks? Requires better sealing maybe. Read on...
That has been my experience on an engine that had been using EG based (green) coolant and swapped over the red dexcool. It was actually a remanufactured Ford Explorer engine I was installing the water pump on and was having a time sealing it up. During a discussion with the technical support folks at Permatex, the engineer I spoke with had been with Ford for years and informed of the phenomenon I was experiencing with older engines. He pointed out that Dexcool formula was different and would find spots to leak out that the EG formula would not.
I changed my 1990 240 over at about 115K with no ill effects up through the current 176K. So it may be very engine-specific.
