Sounds pretty nasty either way. I'm not sure what the cause is, but I can tell you it isn't the blower motor. Blower motor just causes air to rush in, so when its out you can still have heat, there just isn't any power.
At worst a shorting or blown blower motor can cause the number... 15? fuse to overheat, blow up like a giant balloon, and melt horribly. That's what happened in my 85 740. I had to bypass it (wired in a rubber fuse connector/holder) and replace the blower to get it working.
