Oxygen sensor 200 1979

I get better idling - smoother and at a controllable speed when the Oxygen sensor is disconnected (CIS). I don't have an exhaust gas analyzer, so have been using a dwell meter as recommended in the Bentley manual. It indicates that the mixture is too rich with the sensor connected. I assume this indicates a malfunction someplace - the Oxygen sensor or ecu. Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks in advance.

Jim
