Mine does this periodically, especially when the flame trap gets clogged (or flame trap vaccum hose rots ) and the engine blows a little oil. After I clean the trap up and get a new hose the problem goes away but I guess I better quit being lazy an fix the sucker with a rool your own fix as you suggest.
