Hello.
I believe the 240s use four quarts of oil. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong or if there's a difference in engine types (B21, B230, etc.).
There's been plenty of discussion on this board regarding the best type of oil to use. You can do a search in the archives to read up on what others have said. For those who choose synthetic, Mobil 1 seems to be the favorite. Synthetic seems to clean the engine more efficiently.
I've heard that with older engines, a sudden change to synthetic may "open" some very small leaks that had been "plugged" by regular oil. I have yet to perform my own oil change, so I've been doing my own research in preparation. What I plan to do is put in three quarts of regular oil and one quart of synthetic since my car has always used old-fashioned oil. But I think what's more important is changing the oil on a regular basis in the first place. My dealer has serviced my car since it was a baby, and my engine is in excellent shape (knock on plastic trim!).
FYI, my Volvo dealer in Dayton, Ohio uses Exxon Superflo Oil.
By the way, what do you plan to use for filters? Most people here feel that Mann is by far the best filter, again based on my own research. They crop up on eBay now and then (that's where I got mine), and I think foreign auto parts stores may have them, but many other car parts stores don't.
