Yes what you describe is strange. Could it be that you have a weak coil or bad HT wire from coil to distributor that breaks down under the load of the plugs. The plugs do put a load on the coil that would not be present when you disconnect the center lead.
You did put the rotor in didn't you? Don't laugh I left it out once.
