Sounds like the mixture is definitely too rich.

You may be right about the O2 sensor. Other possible culprits could include loose wiring connections to any sensors affecting ignition or fuel injection behavior, or a dirty throttle body (although it would have to be pretty bad).

Check the 700-900 FAQ under "Engine Tune and Performance; Symptoms". There are several items of interest there that may help.
