If you are cleaning up equipment used with DOT 3 and are taking the
items apart, you can clean with hot water, just be sure that everything
is good and dry before you put it back together again.

We used to buy a shellac solvent/thinner that was methyl alcohol that worked
OK. Have you tried a paint store?
