In an M41 trannyI think there's a similar PITA. I found a snap ring type tool that had a screw to expand/retract the jaws and it had flat tips with a waffle pattern that did the job. The ring of about 3/16" square stock with bevaled ends? Can't say I've taken apart an M46 yet, but I don't think there's a world of difference to the M42 that I did. That's how you can get the steel clutch alignment dowels.
