Great info, I was planning exactly the mod you describe. I had heard that it was possible if the steering column was swopped. I don't have my 164 yet, my 1968 145 has only one collapsible UJ/rubber joint, which appears in-line. It sounds like you were set on keeping the original column and switch? Do you think it would work with the 164 column? Could you expand on why a combination column was not possible?
