Thanks for the speedy responses!

I checked my manual again but there was no mention of a neutral start switch or neutral safety switch in the index. I checked in a few sections and finally came across point 33 "Starter inhibitor/reverse light switch - check and adjustment" in chapter 6 "Gearbox, overdrive and automatic transmission". There's a sketch of the inhibitor on the page opposite, so now I at least know what I'm looking for! I'm still not entirely sure where it is in the car, as the picture on the previous page of the automatic transmission is a little confusing (to me at least :)) but I'm sure that when I stick my head in the bonnet and look around tomorrow I should be able to spot it!
