Front end clunking - replace shock mountings? 200 1979

Regarding Paul S.'s question, my mechanic spent a while bouncing the car and test driving it before deciding that the problem was, he felt, the mounts. He had already tightened whatever loose nuts around the shocks he swa, though I'm not sure how carefully everything else was examined.

If I bounce the car myself I do not clearly hear the clunking.
