When I did my heater blower I just hung the ECU from the door using a bent coathanger, I did not disconnect it.

One thing I did do was to clean the mounting locations for the ECU's frame in case they were grounds.

I sanded the mounting points on the frame and I even scraped some extra paint off where the frame made contact with the rest of the car.

You might want to do the same when you clean the plug.
