coolant sensor on 740 700 1990

I had the same problem on my 1989 740ti. I replaced the $30 sensor located on the head just under the intake manifold. I was able to do the replacement without removing the intake by removing the ping sensor just below the temp sensor.

Before replacing make sure that the wire connection is good. My friend "fixed" his temp gauge problem by cleaning the contacts on the connector and the sensor.
