Black smoke = too rich.

If its a '73 1800ES and if its same to assume it still is running the D-jet EFI then I'd suspect the usual things - check the fuel pressure and injectors, the air pressure sensor and the engine temp sensor. On these cars even a vacuum leak in the right place can actually force it to run rich.
