Engine not starting! 200 1980

I have a 1980 240 DL. Recently, it just dosent want to turn over. the starter works, but sounds like it is going too slow. I checked the fuses first thing, no problem there. It may be a bad started, but before I go doing any expensive replacements, I would like to know if anyone has had similar problems, and what the fix was? thannks in advance for any help I get! Mike
