I sometimes look at the odo on cars in salvage yards.
The highest 740 I've seen was 500,000miles or so. The car was
the first style 740 with an automatic and the seats and carpets
and pedals and such looked like the car had that many miles
on them. I also saw a 76/77 242 with 600,000miles. It had an
overdrive transmission and a sticker on the timing belt that
said that the belt was changed at 580,000miles. It too looked
like it had been very well broken in.
Neither had rust or accidents or any other indications of
why it was in the yard, other than the terrifying number of
miles on the car. I might have bought the 242, if I had seen
it when it was running, but that's just because I'm sure they
were all highway miles.
