Need answer to dumb question 700

Hi all,

I just recently got into the Volvo scene and have a question regarding the 740 / 760. I looked at an '84 760 turbo. Now I thought 740 meant it was a 4 cylinder and 760 was a 6 cylinder. But the car I looked at was a 4 cyl. What's the difference between 740 and 760? And, was brown ever a factory ext. color for this model?
