If and when the overboost protection comes into play you will know for sure. The car will jerk violently like your rear bumper is chained to a tree. It sounds like a fuel problem, but not the overboost protection problem. You might need to check the fuel pump fuse and make sure its in good condition and make sure the electricial system is putting out a good 13-14v while running. I noticed on my car that before I fixed some weak grounds and replaced the alternator, the car would hesitate under full boost beacuse the old fuel pump couldn't keep up. I was barely getting above 12v, and with the lights on it was a surprise my battery didn't die.
Another idea is to run some injector cleaner through, clean the throttle body, replace the vacuum hoses and make sure the car is tuned up.
I have had 2 smoke issues with my 83' 242Ti in the past. The first was fuel related (way too rich) causing black smoke under throttle and weaker than usual power (and horrible gas mileage). The second was a blown turbo that poured oil right into the exhaust that caused more of a blue smoke, but in very high amounts.
There are other people on the board that know a lot more about the fuel system and troubleshooting than I do, so just wait for a few more posts, and give the archives a try.
Good luck,
