Just trying to put myself in your place (3.8 - that's great!!) depending on your situation and the availability of used parts, you might have already considered and rejected what I would do: Grab a compressor from a pick 'n' pull and replace it (after recovering the refrigerant, of course). Then, regardless you'd leave her with power steering while you explored the innards of the original. And chances are pretty good you'd be able to pull a good one at the bone yard. Of course, you have to bring your recovery unit to the junkyard too now that you're certified! ;-)
