Have you replaced any of the deteriorated wiring that 83-86 240's are infamous for?
I had the same problem with my son's 83 245 with 175K miles on it. He and I spent a fine Xmas week in the garage and replaced the 5 main wires (including the 2 you mentioned). Has been running superbly ever since (235 K miles now).
Either get on Ebay and buy a replacement wiring harness($100-200) or get the instructions from the Brickboard archives on replacing the wires yourself ($10-20)
