What year is your 740?

If it's a 92 you can sort of self-diagnose the ABS system. It'll tell you what the deal is.

Other common causes for trouble (nondiagnostic system) are a broken rear axle sensor wire (common) and also low power supply. Does the ABS light come on immediately when you start the car, or only after you start driving? This can have different meanings, depending when it comes on.
