I had the exact same problem 900

Except that mine eventually got to 1 liter every 400km.

After I spent $4,000 and 10 days rebuilding the head and practically everything else... "since I was in there anyway".

It ran fine for 5 minutes.......

It turns out that the piston rings were in equally bad shape. Now, with the head compression restored to 220psi....... IT BLEW OUT A PISTON RING!!!

By the way... Volvo discontinued those piston rings... because they blowout. So you would be looking at all new pistons, con-rods, bearings, rings... and maybe a block.

Best bet.... do a compression leakdown test. Pinpoint this son of a bitch before it makes you go broke. If the engine is shot, get a used one or just junk the car.
