The newest 240 I have is a 1988 244GL, but it's likely that the fuel pump relay is at the same place on yours as on mine.

Remove the under-dash padding on the passenger side, and look at the firewall. You should see the relay mounted on a clip just above the floor carpet. It is a rectangular item, not a cube like so many others are. It has 6 lug terminals and can be hard to get off its base.

Repair is re-soldering it. Remove the cover and re-solder where the wires connect to the lugs. Use a small iron tip and be careful to not get solder where it bridges to a wrong thing. Look the unit over for evidence of high heat. That may be a clue to another problem.

Check out the 25-amp fuse that's up in the front left of the engine bay. It is mounted on a little short rail attached to the LF inner fender, along with the headlight stepping relay and the power distribution box.

That fuse hardly ever blows, but the connections inside get so heated and full of crud and corrosion that the fuel pumps get inadequate or intermittent voltage.
