Fuel Guage on an '83 DL doesn't work

I have an '83 DL sedan, and it has a few problems I would like to work out, so I'll post them here for help one at a time. The first problem is the fuel guage, which doesn't work at all- sits on "empty" all the time. What all components are involved in the fuel guage, and how can I systematically check them all until I find the problem? Thanks in advance for your help!!
