Temperature Gauge

1986 760 GLE turbo Wagon.
When driving in the mountains the engine boiled over. The temperature gauge stillshowed normal. I've checked the gauge with 68 ohm resistors and it is
correct. I checked with 34 ohms and it indicated in the red. I checked
the temperature sensor and it is ok. I've tried overheating the engine at home
by blocking the radiator, but the gauge still reads normal. The radiator does
not have a radiator cap so I don't know how pressure is controlled. If the water never get above 100C then the gauage would not indicate overheating.
Any ideas?
thanks!
