Check Engine means the car's OnBoard Diagnostics (OBD) has detected something amiss.

this is the FAQ

and more specifically, the section you want that will let you know how to retrieve an error code is here

if it's the service light, that's different. Service is just a reminder for maintenance and goes on every 3000 (or 5000?) miles.

Check Engine means there's something wrong.
