If the clutch slipped, the engine would wind up in RPM without delivering power to the wheels.

Other possibilities include a fuel problem, such as relay, pump, AMM, pressure regulator. Also, a plugging catalytic converter can cause a serious power loss when under power. If yours was rattling, it means it has loose chunks floating around inside. These can shift in an instant and completely block the pipe (resulting in immediate power loss), and then a moment later they can shift again allowing better exhausting.
