Newbie to Board asks: are those r134a conversion kits worthwhile?

For many, the decision to convert to r134a is purely an economical one, as it can be had significantly cheaper than freon. It does not necessarily cool any better. In fact, it has been said that freon is a superior refrigerant, and that a properly configured A/C system will produce lower temps. with Freon than it ever will with r134a.

So, if you are expecting ice cold air from the vents, you will be very disappointed. However, the system will be cheaper to service (you can do it yourself) and r134a is dirt cheap.

(Yes, the kits do work. )
