The only time I have ever been stranded is when the alternator stopped charging because of a worn-out brush. This was very sudden and happened in the middle of a long trip. When the alternator stops charging, only the battery is running the fuel pump, injectors, computer, etc and eventually the battery will become discharged to the point that the car won't run.
So if your alternator and brushes are original, I'd highly recommend replacing the brushes.
