You can check codes yourself, but I'm going to guess that the check engine light is caused by low RPMs. That is, as far as I am aware, the only reason that the check engine light can shut itself off, since it's only really responding to the signal that shuts it off to begin with (when the car is running).
Watch the tachometer next time it happens to see if the RPM is below around 700. It could be just a small operational issue rather than anything serious.
