Beyond repairing the handle, don't forget to THOROUGHLY lubricate the moving 'n sliding parts inside the latch mechanism. Otherwise you'll be repairing the handle again soon.

In addition to the white lube you mention, I like to also saturate the mechanism with motor oil and then blast it with compressed air. This blows the oil into the innards of the latch mechanism. The oil will drip from the bottom edge of the door for about a week.
