I'll be jiggered!! They are (up to now) right here in Bartlesville
and I had never heard of the test before!!
In answer to your question, ABSOLUTELY!!
It's hard to find one that doesn't have at least ONE bad lobe!
B18 and B30 engines have the same problem.
You can beat the problem by using the IPD lifter and pushrod kit or
equivalent.
The problem is that they use chilled iron lifters which have a thin hard
skin on the surface that contacts the cam. I think in the 70s they may
have had quality problems on both cam and lifters and once the surface
is damaged and starts to wear, it exposes a sharp, hard edge around
the worn spot that literally eats the cam up. I had one B18 that had so
little lobe left that when set to the proper valve clearance, didn't open
the particular valve at all. I did a valve job without checking the lift
and put it back together no better. Backfiring through the back carb, and
if you pulled #4 plug wire it would form a cloud of gasoline vapor in
front of the back carb (aircleaner off). Stuff didn't have anywhere to
go except back out where it came in.
I'll check my contacts and see what I can find out about this test.
