140/164 vs. 240 140-160

I've looked at a couple of 140 as well as 164 pictures on Ebay, both inside and outside, and I'm astounded that those cars look almost exactly the same, regardless of year. For example, the gas, brake and clutch pedals from a '72 164 looked just like those from a '93 240 wagon. Even the outside door handles and door lock buttons looked the same. In comparing the 140 Series to later 240s, I've also noticed that the a/c controls, radio placement, and gauges are quite the same. Did Volvo intentionally do that on purpose, make the same parts for over 25 years?
