OD on 1987 740 Turbo Intercooler (WAGON)(automatic)

I have recently purchased this vehicle privately and the OD button etc was never really explained properly to me. The vehicle runs extremely well right now but the only hiccup is poor mileage on the highway. It is very probable that I am using this feature incorrectly. Note, the car does shift into 4th gear without any problems, except as noted above the poor mileage. About 380 kilometers per tank. Not very good. Can anyone enlighten me???
